Sri Aman Monument

While walking around Sri Aman town, I came across a square with a monument at the centre of it. There is no official name for this structure and for the sake of this post, I decided to call it the Sri Aman Monument.

There is a tree sitting on top of this monument and I was left to wonder what does it represents. There is no information board nearby to explain in details regarding this monument. However, the monument is surrounded with self explanatory engraving.

This crocodile represents the most fearsome crocodile in Sri Aman which was named Bujang Senang. For many years, Bujang Senang had terrorized the Batang Lupar River, killing many people in the process. It was rumored that Bujang Senang is about 20 feet long with a white strip at his back and lived for almost 50 years. He finally met his fate in 1992.

The other engraving on the monument depict the traditional economic activities and the culture of all the ethnic groups who live in Sri Aman.

Pasar Tamu Sri Aman

Pasar Tamu in Sri Aman is a must visit place for first timer to this town as it offers a variety of items one don't usually get to see elsewhere.

The tamu is located within the town itself and just a stone throw away from Hoover Hotel.

There are a number of stalls here selling food and snack. Just nice if one came here with an empty stomach.

Anchovies are widely available here.

There ain't much option for fish here and almost every stalls sell the same type of fish. Hence, I enquire the sellers and found out that this fresh water fish is sourced from nearby Lubok Antu.

For those who are looking for pet, gold fish, turtle, rabbit, hamster and etc are sold here

Fresh vegetables and jungle produce can be easily sourced here. According to the locals, some of those jungle produce have medicinal property and able to cure certain diseases.

Interesting thing is that there are a variety of rices to choose from here. They got all sort of rice namely Mamut, Kanowit, Bario, Bubuk and etc.

I don't see any florist shop in Sri Aman but flowers can be sourced right here at the tamu itself

Some traders trying to sell some wicked toys for the children.

The tamu is also an ideal place to shop for Iban's handicraft. One will have more choices here than any other souvenir shops in Sarawak. Best of all, they are sold cheaper here.

Chinese Temple @ Sri Aman

Not far away from the Sri Aman Esplanade is a beautiful Chinese temple sitting beside the Batang Lupar River.

The temple was locked during our visit and we were just able to admire the temple from the outside. There is no official name for this temple.

The temple is decorated mainly with mythical creatures such as phoenix, dragon and etc.

Sri Aman Esplanade

The upgrading and beautification work on Sri Aman esplanade has been completed and I was impressed with its current state.

The esplanade also serves as the observation centre for the famous tidal bore or known locally as benak. The tidal bore in Batang Lupar is created when the force of the tide water rushing up the river and causes the river to reverse its flow.

To find out when is the next tidal bore, check out the notice board at the esplanade. It will be more convenient if the time was made available in the internet.

The esplanade is a favourite place for the local to unwind and relax. This is something the local can be proud of beside the adjacent Fort Alice.

The esplanade extended to the other side of the hill where Fort Alice is situated. However, the path leading to the other side seems to be uncompleted and one will have to cling to the railing to avoid the muddy soil after a heavy rainfall.

On the other side, there is a circular shape recreational area which is unique in its own right. Below the structure is a what seems to be a small multi purpose hall or exhibition centre
