Flemington Hotel, Taiping

Flemington Hotel is probably the best hotel to stay at while in Taiping. It serves as a good base to explore the town itself, Taiping Lake Garden and Maxwell Hill.

The hotel offers 4 room types; Superior Room, Premier Room, Junior Suite and Executive Suite.

The size of the superior room (RM 148) is quite decent. It did not have a refrigerator but that did not bother me. In fact I don't see anymore space inside the room to accommodate a small refrigerator. I slept quite soundly in my 2 nights stay here and that don't happen very often in most of my hotel stay.

Each room is equipped with LCD flat screen, individually air conditioning system and standard coffee & tea making facilities.

On top of that, daily newspaper is sent to the guest door step every morning around 7am.

It also comes with an electronic safe deposit box which came in handy to keep my valuables.

Internet service is also available in every room. Just plug in and one is ready to go. Unfortunately, I did not bring my laptop along to test its speed. Free wifi is also available though.

All the superior rooms here are not blessed with a nice view. One would need to stay in the premium room and above to get the lake view.

On the rooftop (5th floor), there is a skybar and swimming pool. This will be a perfect place to sip a pint of cool Carlsberg draught beer and enjoy the scenic lake view at night.

Complimentary breakfast is available at Raintree Cafe starting from 7am. They serve decent food and the staffs are pretty efficient.

I manage to try their Flemington Grilled Chicken Chop (RM 15) at Raintree Cafe for dinner.  Not too bad and it is pretty cheap too. Most of the food on the menu are quite reasonably prized.

I have a pleasant stay here and this will definitely be my first choice should I have the opportunity to come here again.

Chicken Pelicana Sibu

Chicken Pelicana is a Korean fried chicken franchise which somehow set its first outlet in Sibu. This is probably the first of this franchise brand in Malaysia.

The outlet is next to Medan Mall and just opposite the Hong Fu Restaurant.

There has a few menu on the list. Been a first time here, it is actually quite hard to decide what to order.

I decided to have Together Chicken Combo (RM 28.80) which feeds 2 person. It comes with  2pcs Peli Cruchy Chicken, 5pcs Yangnyeom Chicken,  a bowl of Korean Fragrant rice, french fries, 2 Korean side dish of the day and 2 cups of Pepsi.

The chicken (Crunchy and Yangnyeom) definitely taste better than the other chicken franchise place. I particularly love the Yangnyeom Chicken which is not too spicy and its marinating sauce is just right. The chicken tastes better with the yellow sauce included in the set meal.

The fries is equally impressive with its larger cut compare to most fast food franchise place. The fragrant rice tastes really nice and goes well with the side dish.

This outlet also sell Korean canned drink which I did not have the opportunity to sample.

From my observation, the outlet do not have many people dining here, probably due to the more expensive price compare to other fast food franchise. I just hope it can survive for many years to come.

They have a nice place to dine. Unfortunately, the first floor is usually without the air conditioned on due to lack of customer.

Taman Bahagia (Jalan SS 2/7) Pasembur and Cendol

It's hard for me to find a decent Pasembur and Cendol place which is within easy reach considering I don't have wheels to reach the harder to reach areas.

Just opposite the Taman Bahagia LRT station (Jalan SS 2/7), there is a little truck which usually park beside a playground which been selling pasembur and cendol for 3 generation now.

The owner is a friendly man and I can see the people who coming to his stall are his regular customers.

Well, for those who plan to eat here, there are plastic chairs and wire rope barrels as a table around the playground. At least one is protected from the scorching sun by the tree shade.

The cendol (RM 1.50) is pretty average. It basically has all the ingredients normally found in a normal cendol.

The Pasembur (RM 4) is made up of mixture of cucumber, bean curd, turnip, hard boiled egg and prawn fritters. Topped up with nutty and spicy sauce, this is just a perfect afternoon snack.

It is not the best pasembur in Klang Valley but it still able to satisfy my crave for a decent pasembur.

Peter's Pork Noodle

Peter's Pork Noodle has been around for sometime now and some regard it as one of the best in the Klang Valley.

The stall is not easy to locate for those who isn't familiar with Brickfields area. Try to walk along Jalan Tun Sambanthan once alight from KL Sentral until you see a Pos Laju Office. Just opposite the Pos Laju office is a small open air car park. The food court is just beside it. The Mayflower Seafood Restaurant billboard should be the landmark to look for.

Peter's Pork Noodle stall is always busy but the owner has several foreign workers to help him up. In fact I notice a lot people tend to take away rather than to sit down and enjoy this sinful meal. It even has a rule when making order posted at its stall.  One would need to mention the table number when making order and update them whenever one shift to another table. That is pretty inconvenience if one is to come alone in a fully packed environment.

The latest price for the dish is as follow:
1. Big Bowl + egg: RM6.50
2. Big Bowl: RM6.00
3. Small Bowl + egg: 5.50
4. Small Bowl: RM5.00

Prepare to sweat it up when dining here as it can be very hot even with the ceiling fans spinning at full speed.

I don't have to wait long for the noodle to arrive. I reckon the wait is less than 10 minutes.

The soup is somewhat sweet and full of porky flavour. It comes with poach egg (optional), mince pork, sliced pork, vegetable, pork liver and deep fried pork lard.

To be honest, I still prefer the SS15 Pork Noodle compare to Peter's even though the wait is close to 1 hour over there. Somehow, the mass produce pork noodle here did not satisfy my palate compare to the individually cooked order.

If one is looking for an above average pork noodle without having to wait for too long, Peter's Pork Noodle is the place to go.

Melawati Hill Mound

The mound is located on Bukit Melawati approximately 120m from the Batu Hampar and built during the era of Sultan Ibrahim from earth measuring 20 x 20 feet.

There is a huge angsana trees which is believed to be more than 200 years old.

This mound was built with two objectives, namely as a platform for the Sultan to rest while entertaining people who were involved in cock fighting. The second objective was to have a storage area for the safekeeping of government property at that time. It is believed that there was a door to a cave hidden underneath the mound where the assets of the treasury were kept.

The Bedrock @ Bukit Melawati

There is a fortress like structure not far away from the museum where a bedrock (Batu Hampar) is located.

The bedrock (Batu Hampar) is located at the far end of the Sultan's palace garden.  It is placed on an open area with three descending steps in the direction of the sun rise.

It is actually a solid piece of stone measuring 5 x 5 x 1 feet square and supported by a heap of stone and sand as its base.

It is believed that this stone was used as a place to behead traitors. There is also a theory that the stone was a place for Sultan Abdul Samad to relax and view the township of Kuala Selangor.

At this very place also the presence of the monkeys are heavily felt. In fact, I feel uneasy venturing here alone as I never know whether those monkeys might attack me.

Kuala Selangor Historical Museum @ Bukit Melawati

Right at the top of Bukit Melawati is a small museum whose collection relate to the history of Kuala Selangor. Entrance is free and it is definitely worth a visit once reaching the top of this hill.

There are a few canon display inside the museum which had been used in this hill before.

This is the replica of what is believed to be the first flag of Selangor. It is believed the flag has been waved at Kota Malawati, Kuala Selangor during the Dutch raid in 1784. It was then brought to Amsterdam and still been kept there until today.

Some of the interesting Dutch ceramic ware on display here.

The diorama depicting Sir Francis Light who came to trade with Selangor during the reign of Sultan Ibrahim (1782-1826).

The porcelain coffee set containing 4 cups, a coffee pot and a tray coloured gold with white motif Chinese calligraphy.

The diorama showing the activity of Kuala Selangor Port during the reign of Sultan Ibrahim.

Replica of the Dutch pistols.

The diorama which depicts the fierce battle with the Dutch to regain back Bukit Melawati.

English plates which were used during the British Colonisation in Malaya.

This 50 gallons Foam Fire Wheeled Extinguisher was widely used in the Federation of Malaya Police Headquarters between 1940-1950. The machine was imported from the UK.
