Concrete spiral stairs is rare nowadays but some can still be found behind the old shop houses along Raminway, Jalan Sanyan and Jalan Morshidi Sidek.
I believe the best preserved spiral stairs in the town is the one behind the shop houses along Jalan Morshidi Sidek and Jalan Sanyan. Bear in mind this structures were built during the colonial time, somewhere in 1958.
Here are some of the spirals stairs behind those shop houses. The purpose of building the spiral stairs remain unclear but it looks like it serves as emergency exit and the only access route to the open area roof. The spiral stairs is pretty narrow and can fit one person only at a time. This obviously save a lot of space.
There are also a few spiral stairs behind the building along Raminway.
The spiral stairs here appear to be enclosed by fences and concrete to prevent any unauthorized access to the owner's business premises.
I hardly come across this type of spiral stairs anymore except the one in Sibu and a few shophouses in Johor Bahru. I hope the local authority realize the significant of this structure and take the necessary steps to preserve it for the future generation.

very nice observation indeed
Now you remind me of something about spiral staircase. I used to thought spiral staircase is packed with ghost and monster because it's dark, damp and cold inside o.O"
Frankly I don't like spiral staircases - makes me dizzy just climbing them or going down.
But one thing good I think is, if you fall down a spiral staircase, you will be stopped somewhere halfway. Compared to a straight staircase, you will end up tumbling all the way down! LOL!
Nice observation! I never take notice of the existence of such staircases!
wow, how come i never notice them?
Iron has made its name through Spiral Stairs

Those exterior spiral stairs really look old. I wonder if it's slippery because I'm seeing some moss in there.
