Sibu BASE Jump 2009

It was a beautiful morning yesterday for Sibu town's first ever base jump. The weather was cloudy but there were hardly any wind which is ideal for a base jump.

The jump point was from Wisma Sanyan, the tallest building in Sarawak which stands at 126m

The landing point was at the Sibu Town Square Phase 1 which is just in front of Wisma Sanyan. Even though the landing area is huge, the jumper must be vigilant and not to steer the parachute into any of the 4 spire towers at the edge of the town square or else the collision would be ugly.

A lot of crowd turned out to the event to watch the base jump. The event was scheduled to run from 8am until 5pm. Basically, the base jumpers will jump over and over again during that period.

The jump was pretty straight forward on a calm day with all the jumpers landed safely at the town square.

The jump from the top of the building to the landing point takes around 22-24 seconds

It was reported there were a total of 16 jumpers participated in this event. The jumpers are from Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand, United States, Russia, Singapore, France, Finland and India. Gary Cunningham who is regarded as a world famous base jumper from Australia also participated in the jump.

The jump started to get a bit tricky in the afternoon as moderate wind started to kick in. Hands up to these jumpers who took the risk in this windy condition to make the jump.

It started to rained around 1.30pm and I reckon they stop the jump after that.

The best part of the event is the friendliness of the base jumpers themselves. Once landed, one can approach them to take photographs. The children were especially thrilled with it.

The event can be improved further if the organizer set up a big screen and show live coverage as to what really happened at the roof top of Wisma Sanyan, moments before the jumpers made their jump. Each of the jumper's helmet is also equipped with camcorder. It will be interesting to see the live footage of their camcorders 0n the big screen.

It might be educational also if the organizer held a mini exhibition at the large town square to give more information to the public about base jump as well as the profile of each of the jumpers that day

Will it be more interesting if there is wind? Will they still be able to land at same place?

In windy condition, the jumpers were actually pushed to one side by the wind. I even thought they will land at the nearby parking lot (or even crashed to a tree). However, they skillfully steer their parachute to the town square and landed safely
