Kanowit is a small town around 58km away from Sibu town. It is said the town got its name from a Melanau ethnic group called the Kanowit.
The waterfront. There is a jetty nearby the waterfront which I reckon used to be the express terminal for this town.
Kanowit town is built on the mouth of Kanowit River at the bank of Rejang River
The town is made up of three streets of 1930s vintage Chinese shop houses. These shop houses still stand elegantly without giving in to development.
However the sidewalks along the old Chinese shop houses has been upgraded and beautified.
I notice there are only two inns only in this town for those who wish spent a night here. Both the inns are facing the Kanowit River.
There are a few places which I will like to venture again while in Kanowit; The St. Francis Xavier Primary School which is the first primary school in Sarawak and a hike up the Water Board Hill.

is the river polluted?
A smile from SJ =)
Interesting. I have never met any Kanowit people before. Are they only found around the Sibu Area?
