Sungai Merah
Sungai Merah is about 4km from Sibu town. Sungai Merah is an important and historic place as in 1901 a group of Chinese immigrant led by Wong Nai Siong landed here. This is where it all began and Sibu town started its expansion.
Sungai Merah consists of 2 row of shop houses along a 1km stretch of road. It used to be wooden shop houses until the Sibu Municipal Council render it unsafe and replace them with a new shop houses. Sungai Merah Bus Company ply this area and Bus No. 9 commute this area with Sibu town.
This new shop houses just completed a few years ago replacing the old shop houses once at this site.
A new supermarket also been constructed here. This site used to be a bakery and barber shop
A fresh paint is also coated on the old buildings. It is defintely a good effort to give this sleepy town another life line.
Some development also happened around the area with more new shop houses been constructed.
There are still a handful wooden structure selling fruits and motorcycle repair workshop. There is no telling whether this structure will give way for development or new buildings
There is also a "tamu" site opposite the wet market for the natives to sell their crops during the weekend and public holiday

Thanks for the guided tour about Sungai Merah. Is this place part of Malaysia?
Btw, thanks for commenting The Men in Uniform at Martyr's Shrine. :)
Yes, Sungai Merah is within Sibu town.
It's nice to visit small towns like this. Thanks for sharing, now I know there's this place in Sibu. Hope the authorities will preserve the historical places all over the country!
the 2nd last picture look like last time when i went to Hattyai they have in "big market".
I am quite excited whenever I see a wet market in Malaysia cos I don't think we can see such big wet market along the roadside in Singapore anymore. But sometimes as a Singaporean we are too used to supermarkets and wet markets with meats kept in big freezers that I wonder if it is hygienic to hang meats in open space and attract houseflies. But then, I think frozen meats have lost their "freshness taste" too.
falcon-----I made you as a reference in my latest post---just click Malaysia there.....
i like the place. though it's ubanized but the place is clean.
why is it known as sg merah? is the river really red in color???

From what I heard from the old folks, the river used to be red, hence the name. To see the photos clearer, click on it.
