Hongkong & Shanghai Building @ Ipoh

Another historic building in Ipoh Old town is the Hongkong & Shanghai Building (now house the HSBC Bank) which is located next to Padang Ipoh.

This building is categorized as one of the Ipoh Heritage Building by the Ipoh City Council.

This building was built in the 1930s when the economy was growing rapidly due to the great demand for tin and rubber. It was originally occupied by the Mercantile Bank (which had then moved to a nearby building which is now house Elken)

During World War II, it was used as the Japanese Army headquarters. The design of the building is Victorian Neo-Renaissance architecture with detailed Greek and Roman classical motifs on its columns and pilasters.
