Open Burning

Yesterday afternoon, I notice a thick smoke hovering the skyline in Sungai Bidut.

Out of curiosity, I went a bit closer to see what might had cause the thick smoke. As I have no idea where the source was, I started to ask some folks around the area and they told me it was due to open burning at the nearby oil palm or to clear forest.

The smoke travel across the Igan river across to Sibu area. I guess the wind direction had cause the smoke to shift into this direction. The clear sky somehow turned cloudy with this thick brownish smoke on certain area.

View Jalan Awang Ramli Amit. From a distance, it did look like some factory was on major fire.

Here was how it looks like from Sibu town square. Open burning is banned in Malaysia but this was a clear evidence that the regulation is loosely enforced. It has been bloody hot for the past few days and this situation only make things worse.

At night, I notice some areas in Sibu was hazy while driving on some main roads. This is another cause for air pollution and I hope the concerned authorities take appropriate actions against the parties that cause such incident.

Suituapui also said there was open burning somewhere in Sibu. I suggest reporting this to DOE.

BTW feel free to check out the International Blogger Community tag here. :)
