Rambutan

It's Rambutan season again and the tree at my backyard started to bear the fruit few weeks ago. Rambutan in Indonesian or Malay means hairy or in this context, hairy fruit caused by the "hair" which covers this fruit

The young unripe rambutan fruit is green in colour. It's a presage of what to be expected in about 2 weeks time.

The leathery skin is reddish when ripe

There is a second species which is known as "wild" rambutan, a little smaller than the usual red variety and is coloured yellow.

It's quite easy to peel of the skin and can be easily done by using the fingers. The flesh is translucent, whitish with a sweet , mildly acidic flavour.

    Oh, we also have the reddish "Rambutan" here in the Philippines. In fact, my brother-in-law is one of the plantation owners / suppliers of Rambutan. But sad to say, I'm not really fond of this fruit.

    I haven't seen a wild yellow Rambutan. Do they have the same taste?

    The yellow and red rambutan taste almost the same. Some might find the yellow rambutan had a thicker flesh. I still find the red rambutan sweeter

    yes, i still prefer the big red rambutan.. very sweet and nice..

    oh , i better add u back in my list. last nite while trying to change new template, my list of bloggers all gone.. very heartbroken...
    so now i m trying to retrieve as many as i can..

    yeah RAMBUTANS! i've been looking forward to them. the yellow type, the one that crossed-breed (if i m correct)has think fresh is my fav.

    I like the taste of rambutans, but I don't like it when the skin stick to the flesh. =P So , hardly eat this fruit in Singapore, unless someone offers it to me for free hehehe
