Dragon Boat Festival

Today is the Dragon Boat festival celebration, when eating glutinous rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves is a tradition. For the Chinese, eating glutinous rice during the dragon boat festival is a tradition of 2, 000 years to mark the death of patriot Qu Yuan, who plunged into Miluo River in a suicide bid.

Inside the rice dumpling, it could be stuffed with either red bean, peanuts, meat, salted egg, mushroom or even sambal belacan (shrimp paste). I personally like the one with meat and sambal belacan.

It requires some skill to wrap the rice dumpling inside the bamboo leaves and tied it with the straw. After been wrapped, it will be boiled. I used to help my mother to wrap when I was a kid but I think I lost the skill long time ago.

The rice dumpling is hard to digest. So, for those with a weak stomach, it is best to eat a little of this delicacies during day time.
